Chapter Twenty Four
Jordan was awesome, and for days, we were inseparable. We sat together at lunch and in group, and it was nice to have someone that believed me about Trina.
âCan I have a word with you Jordan?â Janine had stopped us in the hall. She was wearing a bright orange sweater with a tight black skirt, and her hair was down for a change. Rumor had it she was dating a new guy, and by the fresh, happy look on her face, I bet it was true.
Janine put her arm around Jordanâs shoulders and they walked toward the front office, while I headed back to our room. For the first time in a long time, I was happy. I felt as though I finally understood what it meant to have a real friend. Trina betrayed me, but I was sure that Jordan understood me and would always be there for me.
Looking at Jordanâs colorful side of the room made me smile. Her sketches graced our walls and made our room a true home. I had not heard from Mom or anyone else for more than a week, except for that random attempt by Trina and her mom to get me to apologize.
I laid down on my bed and closed my eyes for just a minute, then almost jumped out of the bed when I heard a drawer slam. âHey, what are you doing?â I asked Jordan, who was collecting her belongings in a big pile.
I took a closer look and noticed that her side of the room was almost empty. The drawings had been taken off the wall. My mind raced. Was Janine going to have Jordan room with someone else? I finally had a friend who was closer than a sister. I did not need this.
âGreat news. Iâm leaving,â Jordan smiled, but had tears in her eyes. âI finally finished the program. Janine said she thinks that I am going to be okay and that I am going to be an amazing big sister. Can you believe that?â She wiped her eyes and cheeks and repeated, âI am going to be an amazing sister,â then looked at me for a reaction.
I didnât know what she wanted me to say. I couldnât tell her that I was proud of her, because I was going to be lonely again. But I had to say something. She looked so happy. âCool,â I answered.
She smiled widely, shouted, âThis is so awesome!â and went back to packing.
I wanted to tear at my hair and cry like a big baby. âSo when are you leaving?â I asked nonchalantly.
She beamed. âToday! Janine said that my family will be here before lunchtime.â
In less than two hours our room went from colorful and bright, to bare and empty. Jordan did not once ask me how I felt, and I felt so bad, I could not tell her. More than ever, I wanted to get out of Next Steps.
